In September 1985, the first CEREC crown restoration was fabricated out of ceramic at the University of Zurich Dental School, Mörmann using computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/ CAM) technology and a milling device. Today, Dr. Ken Yasuhara provides his patients with this very same procedure at his Honolulu, HI, office.

More About CEREC Crowns

A structurally damaged tooth because of decay or trauma sometimes needs a crown to look good and function properly again. A crown is a durable, cap-like oral appliance that fits over the entire tooth, above the gum line. Contrary to traditional crown fabrication, CEREC same-day crowns are made in the dental office in a matter of minutes.

CEREC Procedure

The process consists of several simple steps:

  1. First, your Honolulu dentist prepares the tooth, which means he removes any decay and reshapes the tooth so that it fits under the crown.
  2. Next, your tooth is scanned into a computer using a wand. The digital pictures appear on a computer to generate a 3D model of your tooth.
  3. CAD/CAM software designs the tooth and a block of dental ceramic material closest to your tooth color is chosen.
  4. The computer transmits the digital design to a milling machine that carves the crown from a block of ceramic in about five minutes.
  5. Finally, any final aesthetic touches are made and the crown bonded to your tooth.

Advantages Same-Day Crown

There are so many benefits to choosing CEREC crowns.

  • You get a new crown(s) in a single visit, instead of visiting your dentist 2-to-3 times, so you save time.
  • You avoid the hassle of wearing temporary crowns.
  • CEREC look just like natural teeth.
  • Digital technology makes it easier to fit a crown without the mess of dental plaster.
  • CEREC crowns are stronger and more resilient.
